Congratulations on the new paint job! It always feels great to get something as dear to us as our cars painted and touched up in a way that fits our style. If you are considering a paint job for your vehicle, or if you are going to be getting one soon, it’s important to think ahead about what you can and cannot do. Once you pick up that newly painted vehicle, you need to know how to care for it. Here is our advice:

Washing

If you just had a paint job, it’s unlikely that your car will be dirty at all. It will likely be extremely clean! If you can wait a week or two before washing, that may be your best choice. Otherwise, handwashing is best. If you have a specific concern, you can address that spot with a cloth and water so it does not damage the paint. Try to wait about 30 days before going to a commercial car wash.

Waxing and Polishing

We are sure that your car paint specialist of choice did a wonderful job. However, in order to have the new paint last as long as you’d like and remain as lustrous as you need, the solvents in the paint need some time to breathe and cure properly. This requires time for the chemicals to properly expand and bond with each other and with the vehicle itself. If you wax your car during this time, you may inhibit the paint’s ability to settle and really adhere to your car. This will shorten the lifespan and performance of your new paint job. Many professionals recommend that you wait to wax your car until at least three months has passed since your paint job. When you do wax your car again, stick to non-abrasive wax or polish, and try to avoid waxing any more frequently than once every two months.

Sealing

Just like waxing, sealing can interfere with the longevity and effectiveness of your paint. We recommend waiting around three months after the paint job before you add any sealant to the freshly painted portions of your vehicle.

Bird Droppings and Tree Sap

For the first few days after your new paint job, try to avoid parking your car anywhere tree sap or bird droppings may land on it. These substances actually contain acids that can damage the finish of every car! However, these can be much more detrimental to your paint’s finish when the paint is still new. If you see these issues on your car, remove them as soon as you can with warm water and a gentle soap!
